Yes — methyl-eugenol traps work very well for the African fruit fly species (Bactrocera dorsalis). Costs around UGX 8,000 per trap, available at NaCRRI Kawanda or Real-IPM Uganda.
Hang 5-6 traps per acre at flowering, refresh the lure every 6-8 weeks. Combine with sanitation: collect and bury fallen fruit weekly. That alone drops infestation 60-70%.
For next season, also consider protein bait spot-sprays (GF-120) on lower branches — knocks down female flies before they lay eggs.
For full-sized continuous harvest, plant 30cm × 30cm. Closer than that (20-25cm) gives smaller leaves but more total biomass — good if you cut weekly for market. 45cm is too wide for the local landrace varieties.
Since your soil is fertile, you can even go to 25cm × 30cm and harvest more frequently. Just make sure to keep nitrogen up — top-dress with diluted CAN or fresh manure tea every 2 weeks.
Good question Joseph. For your conditions, I’d suggest Longe-7H — it’s a hybrid but matures in 110-115 days and yields 40% more than Longe-5 on the same fertilizer. Seed cost is ~3x but the yield difference pays it back easily in one season.
If hybrid is truly out of reach, Bazooka open-pollinated matures in 115-120 days and is widely available. Worth a try.
