I’m planning to plant maize on about 1 acre this short-rains season in Mukono. Last season I used Longe-5 and got OK yield but it took close to 130 days.
Is there a faster-maturing variety that still gives decent yield with the same fertilizer? Budget is tight so hybrid seed is borderline.
Good question Joseph. For your conditions, I’d suggest Longe-7H — it’s a hybrid but matures in 110-115 days and yields 40% more than Longe-5 on the same fertilizer. Seed cost is ~3x but the yield difference pays it back easily in one season.
If hybrid is truly out of reach, Bazooka open-pollinated matures in 115-120 days and is widely available. Worth a try.
