I lost about 40% of last season’s mango harvest to fruit fly. The market rejects damaged fruit at any price.
Is there a low-cost trap that works in our area? I’ve heard about methyl-eugenol traps but don’t know where to buy them locally.
Yes — methyl-eugenol traps work very well for the African fruit fly species (Bactrocera dorsalis). Costs around UGX 8,000 per trap, available at NaCRRI Kawanda or Real-IPM Uganda.
Hang 5-6 traps per acre at flowering, refresh the lure every 6-8 weeks. Combine with sanitation: collect and bury fallen fruit weekly. That alone drops infestation 60-70%.
For next season, also consider protein bait spot-sprays (GF-120) on lower branches — knocks down female flies before they lay eggs.
